Accommodation overview: Deep in Tarka the Otter country where the river glides beneath the trees and time stands still... Orford Mill lies alongside the River Torridge in a beautiful wooded valley, nestled below the historic town of Torrington. With its air of peace and tranquillity, abundant wildflowers and river life, it became the setting for Henry Williamson’s magical story of Tarka the Otter. Indeed, the mill wheel in which Tarka hid from the hound Deadlock was at Orford Mill. This superb location makes a wonderful holiday base, especially for families, with sandy beaches on the North Devon coast only 10 miles away.
The complex consists of a Grade II listed water mill and manor house, now converted into nine delightful cottages, all equipped to Visit Britain ‘4 Star’ standard. Most overlook the charming ornamental courtyard with its ponds and flowerbeds. Riverside is detached and overlooks the river. All cottages retain character features such as exposed beams and stonework, and each is furnished in an individual style to a very high standard. Guests can enjoy an indoor heated swimming pool, with lovely river views, as well as an all-weather tennis court, games room and fenced outdoor children’s play area. In addition, fishing rights are available on 200 yards of river (bring own licence, or avail locally at cost). All the waterways are safely fenced.
The countryside around Orford Mill is dotted with sleepy villages nestled among the hills, while extensive woodlands, traversed by many footpaths, offer the chance to experience the area’s natural beauty at close quarters. Adjacent to the grounds are the renowned RHS gardens at Rosemoor, and other local attractions include Dartington Crystal, offering a factory tour and visitor centre. Great Torrington is only a mile away with good shopping and amenities, and there is golf at nearby Hartland. Orford Mill adjoins Torrington Common which extends to 365 acres, incorporating 20 miles of footpaths. The common is a haven for wildlife. The ‘Big Sheep’ and ‘Milky Way’ theme parks are each less than 10 miles away.
The River Torridge runs downstream to the ancient port of Bideford, still with a working quay offering boat trips out to Lundy Island. Just around the corner is the attractive little town of Appledore with its colourful houses and narrow streets. To either side lies Devon’s most spectacular stretch of coastal scenery – a chain of magnificent cliffs and rocky promontories, interspersed here and there by long flat sandy beaches, where the Atlantic breakers roll in to create ideal surfing conditions. There are splendid beaches at Instow and Westward Ho!, the latter bordered by the Royal North Devon Golf Club, and the Northam Nature Reserve. Further west is the supremely picturesque Clovelly, whose narrow, cobbled main street descends at a dizzying gradient to the little harbour below. To the south, the cathedral city of Exeter can be reached via a delightful drive through lush river valleys.
Orford Mill offers very attractive accommodation set in 3 acres of beautiful gardens with streams, waterfalls and the water wheel which is still operational. Excellent as a touring base, it makes a good choice for a holiday whatever the weather. Shop ½ mile.

Each of the cottages has been individually styled to offer comfortable and spacious accommodation. Great care has been taken to retain the feel of the original buildings and extensive use has been made of traditional materials. Most have garden, terrace or patio. Many cottages have more than one bathroom and some have an en-suite bathroom to every bedroom. Kitchens are comprehensively equipped: most have dishwashers and all have microwave cookers.

Accommodation overview: Between coast and country ... a collection of designer cottages enjoying the best of both worlds Situated in a quiet and peaceful rural location on the edge of the pretty hamlet of Tawstock, these four attractive holiday cottages are only 7 miles from the nearest beach at Instow and conveniently close to all facilities at Barnstaple. The properties have been carefully converted from a range of old stone barns and beautifully refurbished in a fresh contemporary style. With the owners living in the original farmhouse, they form part of the traditional farm courtyard, though Park Gate is no longer a working farm. Each holiday cottage is individual in design, well equipped and comfortable, with attractive furnishing fabrics and great attention to detail. Each has patio doors from the living room leading to its own decked patio and lawned garden, perfect for al fresco meals white watching the sun set.
This is an excellent location for exploring the magnificent coastline of North Devon, from the ‘Golden Coast’ with fine sandy surfing beaches at Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton, to the rugged cliffs of Hartland Point. The coastal footpath offers superb walking with wonderful views of the dramatic shoreline, while inland the wild beauty of Exmoor waits to be discovered. Bideford Bay (also known as Barnstaple Bay), takes in its sweep Westward Ho!, Hartland Point and the beautiful village of Clovelly – much loved by photographers. Instow and the old ship-building port of Appledore shelter in the mouth of the Torridge estuary, and regular boat trips to Lundy (with its twenty or so full-time residents) can be taken from Bideford. Millcombe House on Lundy island, and the castle built by Henry III remain as testimonies of former inhabitants.
Casual cyclists who fancy a spin in the countryside under their own steam will appreciate the Tarka Trail, a popular flat route that is easy to manage and runs from Meeth near Okehampton. Taking its name from Henry Williamson’s Tarka the Otter – one of the finest pieces of English nature writing – it winds its way to Braunton and can be picked up at Barnstaple (just two miles from the cottages), which forms the centre of the figure-of-eight traced by the trail. The northern loop of the trail extends as far as Exmoor, passing through Williamson’s home village of Georgeham via the coast before heading back to Barnstaple.
For visitors with an appreciation of skilled artisans, the famous royal-appointed Brannams Pottery can be found just 1½ miles away. Here the skill of the pot throwers can admired, with the opportunity to purchase goods made on the premises. Definitely worth a visit, too, is the Dartington Crystal factory glass works (7 miles), where molten glass is expertly fashioned into unique works of art by the glass blowers.
There are plenty of places to visit nearby, including a number of family attractions and the famous RHS gardens at Rosemoor, all within a few miles. The nearby town of Barnstaple offers good shops and restaurants, a weekly market and pannier market, theatre, cinema and sports facilities. Shops 2½ miles.

Further afield visit the Eden Project or Plymouth to take in the Barbican and the Hoe, or visit the huge aquarium, another great day out. Tuckenhay is only 5 miles inland from Dartmouth and 3 from the market town of Totnes. Village shop 3½ miles. Riverside inn and restaurant within walking distance.
A superb choice of cottages
Each of the cottages has been individually styled to offer comfortable and spacious accommodation. Great care has been taken to retain the feel of the original buildings and extensive use has been made of traditional materials. Most have garden, terrace or patio. Individual cottage details are shown on the following pages.
Many cottages have more than one bathroom and some have an en-suite bathroom to every bedroom. Kitchens are comprehensively equipped: most have dishwashers and all have microwave cookers.
Couples and honeymooners will feel snug and comfortable in the small cottages: Mill Leat, Mill Stream and Mill Spring. Families can spread out in Papermaker’s or Turbine Cottages, while Mill Lodge, Edgecombe Barn and Tuckenhay Mill House will sleep larger parties in comfort. Of course, combinations of cottages can accommodate bigger gatherings of family or friends.

Accommodation overview: With sea views, this is an enchanting holiday location with a private, 30-minute walk to a secluded pebble and sand beach and the spectacular South West Coastal Path (access only available from 2nd Feb - 31st Aug), where a chain of magnificent cliffs stretches along the Heritage Coast to Hartland Point. Chapmans House is a superb, spacious conversion of an 18th-century stables and coach house with breathtaking views of the North Devon coastline out to Lundy Island and beyond to the Atlantic Ocean. The living area on the first floor takes full advantage of sea views with a large balcony opening from the spacious kitchen/dining room - ideal to enjoy a lazy breakfast or relax and watch magnificent sunsets. Completed to a very high specification, the holiday house is very comfortable and has beamed ceilings and a cosy wood-burning stove. The large, secluded, lawned gardens include a chidren’s play area. There is a shared games room with pool table, table tennis and darts, as well as fun fishing for trout from a large, well-stocked pond. Guests are welcome to explore the 20-acre woodland and pasture (with sheep). A pretty, 30-minute walk across fields leads to a little-known, sandy beach (Porledge Beach) which is a wonderful sun trap and well off the tourist map, making it usually very quiet, even on the busiest summer day. The famous surfing beaches of Westward Ho! (4 miles) and Bude are an easy drive. Bikes can be hired to explore the nearby Tarka Trail and there is sailing, water skiing, golf and riding locally. Numerous NT properties in the area as well as the RHS gardens at Rosemoor and Docton Mill. Visit Hartland Abbey and the charming village of Clovelly (6 miles).
