The exposed beams, traditional Cornish granite and comfortable farmhouse style of the conversion creates a perfect retreat. Set in 250 acres, guests are welcome to visit the farm and see various activities by arrangement. Just 3 miles away you will find The Eden Project and other attractions such as Luxulyan Valley and Viaduct, the Tall Ships at Charlestown, the Lost Gardens of Heligan and many National Trust properties. Within 5 miles there are a number of golf courses including Lostwithiel, Lanhydrock and Carlyon Bay. The sandy beach of Par and the bays of St Austell are within 5 miles. Numerous other beaches on the South coast are all within easy reach and well worth a visit. In the evenings enjoy a BBQ on the patio or eat out at one of the local pubs within 1.5 miles. The popular market town of South Molton has a weekly farmers’ market and a variety of shops, antique and curio shops, pubs and restaurants. Barnstaple, 12 miles, additionally has a theatre, cinema and leisure activities, and places of interest including the Museum of North Devon, Pannier Market, 14th-century St Anne’s Chapel and 18th-century Queen Anne’s Walk. Other family attractions in the area include RHS gardens at Rosemoor, The Big Sheep, The Milky Way, Kilarney Springs, Exmoor Zoo and Dinosaur Park.
Spectacular beaches at Saunton, Croyde, Putsborough, Woolacombe and Westward Ho! are all within easy driving distance. Horse riding is available locally at Chulmleigh and sailing, windsurfing and fishing can be enjoyed at Tamar Lakes and Wimbleball Lake, as well as Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks. Golfers can enjoy a round at Chulmleigh Golf Course within 1 mile of the house and at others which are within 5 miles. Accommodation overview: Sprakes offers a relaxing retreat with complete peace and tranquillity with no other building in sight and surrounded by fields which form part of a large arable farm. This substantial detached barn conversion sits in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the site of an RSPB special bird project where many birds of high conservation concern have been spotted including linnet, a large population of corn buntings, grey partridge and yellow hammers. The barn conversion offers a west facing garden with a large pond which has many wildlife visitors including deer and badgers. In addition, there is a walled enclosed courtyard with a Spanish-style barbecue. Within the farm there are the remains of a Roman villa and the longest long barrow in the south west of England. Sprakes is nestled in the Tarrant Valley, making a good base for walking, cycling or just relaxing in the Dorset countryside. The nearby footpaths join up with the Jubilee Trail.
There are many NT properties, gardens and historic sights including Kingston Lacy House, Stourhead Gardens and Brownsea Island all within a short drive. Within a 30-minute drive lies the wonderful Dorset coastline, with the Blue Flag beaches of Bournemouth and Poole, the Purbeck Hills and the pretty villages of Corfe Castle and Lulworth Cove. Bournemouth is renowned for its clean sandy beach and boasts several public gardens, the best known of which is Compton Acres. The Jurassic and Heritage coastline takes in the port of Weymouth and the lovely village of Abbotsbury with its famous swannery and sub tropical gardens. Along the coast is the famous pebbled Chesil Beach which runs for 18 miles along the coastline. The local Georgian town of Blandford Forum has a range of independent shops waiting to be explored and the cathedral city of Salisbury is a 30-minute drive away. Accommodation overview: Set in a spectacular location on the northern slopes of Exmoor National Park, a few hundred yards from the coast and with views of the Bristol Channel, Yenworthy Farm is situated in ‘Doone Country’, and actually appears in the novel itself. The gun which was supposedly used to repel the ‘Doones’ still hangs in the farmhouse to this day. The farm once had its own mill and the old water wheel can still be seen. Two traditional barns in the courtyard of the farm have been sympathetically converted to offer a very high standard of accommodation throughout.
Yenworthy is ideal for walkers - a rugged pathway leads from the farm down to a secluded beach and there is direct access to one of the most scenic sections of the South West Coast Path. There are 13 miles of footpaths to explore on the farm itself and it even has its own historic monument - an old Roman Fort at Old Burrow. A haven for wildlife, it has four Sites of Special Scientific Interest and rare species of butterflies and trees. The nearest sandy beach is Lee Abbey (5 miles) and there are excellent surfing beaches at Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton within easy driving distance. There are three pubs with restaurants within 3 miles and plenty of shops in Lynton and Lynmouth (4 miles), Polock (7 miles), Minehead (13 miles) and Barnstaple (21 miles), which also has a popular covered market.
