The Argal reservoir and water park is under a mile away and provides excellent world class fly and coarse fishing, recreation area, bird watching and it has its own watersports park with boats available.
The large seafaring town of Falmouth is also close by, 2½ miles, and offers the chance to meander the streets and open quays to sample the local sea food, shopping and pubs. Sea fishing, diving and sightseeing trips are available in the town which is also home to the National Maritime Museum which houses many famous boats and provides an excellent day out. Mawnan Smith is ideally situated for a trip onto the Lizard Peninsula and a trip to the most southern point in the country. Meander down the country lanes, stopping off at the local pubs, tea rooms, and National Trust gardens, or spend an hour on a secluded beach or cove. For more inquisitive minds visit the Goonhilly Earth Station visitors centre or the Porthallow vineyard and sample a strong Cornish liquor or country wine. Accommodation overview: Set in a spectacular location on the northern slopes of Exmoor National Park, a few hundred yards from the coast and with views of the Bristol Channel, Yenworthy Farm is situated in ‘Doone Country’, and actually appears in the novel itself. The gun which was supposedly used to repel the ‘Doones’ still hangs in the farmhouse to this day. The farm once had its own mill and the old water wheel can still be seen. Two traditional barns in the courtyard of the farm have been sympathetically converted to offer a very high standard of accommodation throughout.
Yenworthy is ideal for walkers - a rugged pathway leads from the farm down to a secluded beach and there is direct access to one of the most scenic sections of the South West Coast Path. There are 13 miles of footpaths to explore on the farm itself and it even has its own historic monument - an old Roman Fort at Old Burrow. A haven for wildlife, it has four Sites of Special Scientific Interest and rare species of butterflies and trees. The nearest sandy beach is Lee Abbey (5 miles) and there are excellent surfing beaches at Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton within easy driving distance. There are three pubs with restaurants within 3 miles and plenty of shops in Lynton and Lynmouth (4 miles), Polock (7 miles), Minehead (13 miles) and Barnstaple (21 miles), which also has a popular covered market.
