Ideally placed for exploring East Anglia; the Suffolk Heritage coast and the North Norfolk coast are easily reached. Interesting places include Norwich with its cathedral and castle museum, and Bury St Edmunds - one of the prettiest Georgian towns in Suffolk. Accommodation overview: For a unique holiday experience, Lock Cottage is unbeatable. Surrounded by water and accessed via a footbridge, this delightful, detached lock keeper’s cottage is an oasis of peace and tranquillity, yet is in the heart of the medieval village of Nayland on the Suffolk and Essex border. Built in 1805 with a later extension, the cottage is one of two remaining lock keeper’s cottages from the Stour Navigation which allowed barges to travel from Sudbury to the sea. The setting of the cottage is truly breathtaking with a delightful garden and the River Stour tumbling over a weir, there is plenty of wildlife to see with kingfishers, swans, herons and sometimes an otter on the weir. There is also the opportunity to fish in the lock pool, or venture out in the canoe and rowing boat provided at the property (life jackets provided). With views across the water towards the open countryside of the Dedham Vale AONB, it is hard to believe that just a 55-yard walk along the tow path leads to the village amenities. The surrounding area is a delight to explore, there are many footpaths in the village and golf is available at nearby Stoke-by-Nayland (3 miles).
