Alnwick is only 7 miles with its majestic castle (used in the Harry Potter films), lots of cobbled streets, enchanting gardens, playhouse, inns and restaurants. Dunstanburgh Castle in nearby Craster makes a lovely walk along the cliff top, reached only by foot. Finish off with fresh seafood on the way back in one of the many fine and friendly pubs dotted along the coast. Seahouses known for its fine fish and chips and small working harbour is always a visitor’s favourite. Holy Island is not to be missed but check the tides first or take a boat trip over to the Farne Islands to see the puffins or seals whilst in Seahouses. Embleton village has a friendly pub and restaurant, garage, post office, well-equipped children’s park and magnificent sandy bay. A beach hut is also available to hire in Newton-by-the-Sea (an NT beach) by arrangement with the owner. It is ideally located to explore the beautiful unspoilt county peppered with small friendly villages, fishing harbours, hills and valleys. Bamburgh Castle is a magnificent sight, set high above the beach it towers over the small village and is only a few minutes’ drive where quaint inns, tea rooms and the Grace Darling Museum can be found. Three miles south lies the bustling little seaside village of Seahouses where boat trips can be taken to the Farne Islands to visit the grey seals and migrating sea birds nesting on the islands which are owned by the NT and maintained as a nature reserve. This whole area is famous for its many castles, golf courses and stately homes. Alnwick Castle, famous for Harry Potter and Braveheart films, with its enchanting water gardens, cobbled streets and Georgian houses is only half an hour south of Budle Bay. Inland head towards the Cheviots to explore wooded valleys and open moorland ideal for walkers, cyclists or motoring. Holy Island reached by a causeway at low tide and one of the oldest sites of Christianity in Britain, is a short drive (check the tides). Berwick-upon-Tweed with its ancient walls takes approximately 30 minutes, while Newcastle with its regenerated quayside, fine shops and theatre is 1 hour. An unspoilt county that will need to be revisited to appreciate all it has to offer. Shops 2 miles.

The original manor house was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1087. Killerby Old Hall is situated between the coastal resorts of Scarborough and Filey on part of Britain’s Heritage Coast. These include Whitby, quaint Robin Hoods Bay, a former smugglers haunt, Castle Howard, the market towns of Helmsley and Pickering, the starting point for the North York Moors railway, plus the famous twin bays and castle of Scarborough. For the more adventurous Flamingo Land, the popular theme park can be visited or the Langdale forest experience, 4x4 and off road driving, is within a 30-minute drive.
