A host of Lakeland attractions can be found nearby, including many of Wordsworth’s inspirational locations - his home, Dove Cottage, is open to the public all year. Grizedale Forest, with its Go Ape high wire adventure course, Grasmere and Ambleside are all close by. Visit Hilltop Farm near Sawrey, where Beatrix Potter wrote her many stories about Peter Rabbit and his friends, or take a trip to Hawkshead where there is a gallery dedicated to her original drawings and illustrations. Take a trip across Lake Windermere on the leisurely steamer, which connects with the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway.
The area is rich in historic houses and gardens with Sizergh Castle, Holker Hall and Levens Hall all within easy reach. The South Lakes Animal Park at Dalton is a wonderful day out for all the family, as is the Aquarium of the Lakes at Lakeside and Muncaster Castle with its extensive gardens, World Owl Centre and Meadowvole Maze.
