Benefiting from a secluded and peaceful setting, the cottage is part of the Graythwaite Estate set within 4 acres of woodland offering plenty of natural space where peace reigns supreme. Standing detached, Keepers Cottage boasts private parking and a south-west facing terrace area with barbecue, perfect for those warm summer evenings. Guests are also invited to use the facilities of the converted farmstead (a ten minute stroll), which now provides holiday accommodation and where there is an indoor heated swimming pool (open 8.45am to 7.45pm), a fitness suite (at cost) and bicycle hire. This is an excellent location for exploring the Central Lake District with its varied and extensive visitor attractions. Within 10 miles are Rydal Fell, Rydal Water, Grasmere and the cottage of William Wordsworth, who brought the Lake District to the attention of the world. Just four miles away at Hilltop Farm near Sawrey, is the cottage where Beatrix Potter wrote her many stories about Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddleduck. A gallery at Hawkshead, also four miles, is a gallery dedicated to her original drawings and illustrations. Running through the valley of the River Leven is the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway (4 miles); its train connects with a leisurely steamer and travels to the busy town of Bowness-on-Windermere. Ambleside is a first-class base for walkers, but in addition offers numerous attractions such as St Mary’s Church, whose spire is visible from all over town, Bridge House National Trust Information Centre, Adrian Sankey’s Glass Works and The Armitt, whose collections displays the contribution to Lakeside Society made by John Ruskin, Beatrix Potter and writer Harriet Martineau.
