In an idyllic setting in the Darwin Forest on the edge of the Peak District National Park, this group of holiday cottages enjoys a wonderfully peaceful location from which to enjoy the area’s great natural beauty. Built in traditional Derbyshire stone to blend effortlessly into their surroundings, they are set around the lake and surrounded by mixed woodland, an ideal habitat for a rich variety of wildlife. The cottages are modern and spacious, with comfortably furnished living rooms, several enjoying views over the lake, and an excellent standard of fixtures and fittings throughout, including superbly equipped kitchens. This peaceful spot is the perfect stopping off point for walking and cycling amid superb countryside, and a trekking centre just around the corner provides plenty of opportunity to explore on horseback. For the more adventurous, a whole host of outdoor pursuits is available nearby, including sailing, wind-surfing and canoeing on Carsington Reservoir, 13 miles away, while Derbyshire’s gritstone edges and deep caverns attract rock climbing and pot-holing enthusiasts.
The popular Derbyshire Dales town of Matlock is only 4 miles away, with a good choice of pubs, restaurants and shops. Among the attractions here are the Peak Rail steam trains, the Heights of Abraham pleasure grounds, reached by a cable car across the gorge, dramatic show caverns and Gulliver’s Kingdom. There is also a fascinating Lead Mining Museum and an excellent Tramway Museum at Crich, providing something of interest for everyone. A short drive away is the splendid Chatsworth House with its fine collections of paintings and furniture, and Haddon Hall in the beautiful Wye Valley. Village shop and local pub 2 miles.

Here are fascinating show caverns demonstrating the earth’s history and the local lead mining industry, dating back to Roman times. Gulliver’s Kingdom provides entertainment for the children, while in the Pavilion there is an aquarium and Lead Mining Museum. Within easy reach are several historic houses to visit. Around the Matlocks, the countryside is steeped in history, with many old buildings, Norman churches and stone circles to intrigue the visitor. Further northwest is Kedleston Hall, with its beautiful restored gardens and surrounding park which includes a fishing pavilion and a series of lakes and cascades. Alternatively try shooting at Doveridge Clay Sports, have a day at the renowned Uttoxeter Racecourse, which is on the doorstep, or experience the stunning landscape of the Peak District National Park. Accommodation overview: Chapel Cottage is a traditional stone cottage with a timber frame extension set in a large garden, opening out onto fields, situated on a no-through road in a very secluded hamlet. There is little traffic beyond the occasional tractor or car. Small children will enjoy the chickens, horses and sheep in the neighbouring fields on walks short enough for little legs and can enjoy cycling or a visit to the village well. There are great longer walks which dogs love leading from the village to Worton Wood, and footpaths to Great Tew, Sandford and beyond. If you are a keen cyclist Ledwell is an ideal base for exploring the Cotswolds. Great Tew, with the famous Falkland Arms pub, is only 2 miles away and for those keen on real ale you can take a tour round the Hook Norton brewery, a Victorian brewery using one of the last commercially operated steam engines. There are excellent farmers’ markets every Saturday in villages within 15 minutes of the cottage and a wide range of restaurants, and cafes in the nearest town Chipping Norton, which also has a lido and indoor swimming pool. The designer outlet centre of Bicester Village is only 20 minutes away and other attractions within a 30 minute car drive include Blenheim Palace, traditional Cotwold villages Stow-on-the Wold and Burford, and Oxford. Stratford-upon- Avon is also within easy reach. Shop and pub 1½ miles.
