Accommodation overview: This charming 18th-century detached property, in the secluded grounds of the owner’s country house, is tastefully refurbished throughout, retaining wonderful original features - exposed stone walls, beams and flagstone floors. An ideal weekend get-away for families or groups of friends, it has a separate games room with pool table, table tennis and table football, and a large garden with croquet lawn, mature specimen plants including a 300-year-old cedar tree, and outside terrace with table and chairs for ten - an ideal spot to enjoy al fresco dining. Less than an hour from London by train or car, the property lies in the South Downs National Park on the edge of a picturesque village so classically Downland that it has featured as a TV and film set. In the heart of the village, surrounding the green and cricket pitch, is a cluster of half-timbered houses, notably The Red Lion, a 16th-century inn, the starting point for numerous walks, bike and horse trails, and a launch-site for hot-air balloon flights. Black Down, the highest point in the National Park, with its pine and heather-covered slopes, is immediately accessible. Golf locally and fishing by arrangement. Within a 15-minute drive, visit Petworth with antique shops, beautiful stately home, Capability gardens and open-air concerts, and charming Midhurst, famous for polo at Cowdray Park. Goodwood is 20 minutes, with its motor and horse racing, Fontwell races, West Dean Gardens, Parham House, and Weald and Downland Museum; Chichester and West Wittering with award-winning sandy beach are ½ hour away. Accommodation overview: This spacious, detached, family holiday cottage is in the heart of the pretty village of Elsdon on the edge of the Northumberland National Park. With superb views over the countryside and a generous enclosed garden, this is the ideal location to explore this picturesque area and sure to delight all age groups. Ideally located for walking, cycling, horse riding and touring the unspoilt county of Northumbria and the Scottish Borders, there are many public footpaths around Elsdon, noted for its fortified Pele Tower, its 14th-century church where the dead from the Battle of Otterburn are reputed to have been buried and the earthworks of a Norman mote and bailey castle. There is also a tearoom and riding stables. The popular market town of Rothbury with the glorious gardens of Cragside is only 13 miles away and the pretty little village of Otterburn, with its famous old woollen mill is only 4 miles away. The Scottish Borders are only 30 minutes by car, steeped in history from the constant battles between the Scots and the English and make for ideal days out. Hadrian’s Wall, Alnwick, Kielder Reservoir and Newcastle are less than an hour’s drive. There are many castles and NT properties in this very pretty and tranquil area.
