Accommodation overview: West Lynch, thatched and cosy, has been with the same family for three centuries and lies on the sunny side of the Porlock Valley. Inside, relaxation and comfort abound - it is beautifully furnished with lots of arts and crafts, many sitting areas, 50in and 32in TVs and with facilities such as Wii, games room and indoor pool table. Outside catering is available by an inspired professional chef by arrangement for that special occasion or treat. National Trust woodlands from the former Acland Estates are just beyond the house. These lead to the open moors - with large herds of red deer, Exmoor ponies, the buzzards on the wing and foxes in thir lairs - and dramatic headland of Hurlstone, looking west down to Devon and north to the Welsh coast. Also within walking distance are the romantic villages of Bossington, Selworthy, Allerford and bustling Porlock for year-round needs, as well as Minehead’s farmers’ market. There is surfing at Lynmouth or beyond to Croyde and Woolacombe, and golf at Minehead or the fine course at Saunton for a true test. Horse riding is available for all abilities and entertainment for both children and adults at Lynch Farm and Tropicaria further on. There are also glorious walks, of course, to hidden treasures such as Culbone Church, Butlins at Minehead or Dunster Castle if activities such as outdoor meals, table tennis, croquet and messing about with balls at West Lynch does not suffice. Local beaches are a short drive away, but Bossington beach is within walking distance, with its amazing pebble ridge. Enjoy a stay in this special corner of Exmoor. It is a large detached house surrounded by three old stone barns, forming an open landscaped courtyard, and is surrounded by hundreds of acres of rolling pasture land and woodland, all easily accessible as they are part of the Estate. It is a perfect retreat for walkers and nature lovers, and for enjoying total seclusion, tranquillity and the large variety of wildlife. The house has been fully modernised and renovated, but still retains many of its original features such as large open fireplaces, wood burning stoves, stone flagged floors and shuttered sash windows, and the ground floor bedroom contains the original wood burning bread oven. Enjoy visiting the historic cities of Wells with its magnificent cathedral and Bishop’s Palace, Bath with its Roman Spa and Georgian architecture, and the heritage maritime city of Bristol. Glastonbury is 8 miles away, famous for its festival, Tor and King Arthur legends, and there is a wealth of other nearby attractions such as Wookey Hole Caves, Cheddar Gorge, Clarks Village, Longleat Safari Park, and fishing and bird watching on Chew Valley Lake. It forms one half of the entire property (the owners occupy the other half) and stands in beautiful landscaped gardens complete with a shared outdoor swimming pool, and private patio with furniture and barbecue. The house offers a spacious living room connected by an archway to a delightful sun room with pitched ceiling and large windows, allowing the superb rural views and magnificent sunsets to be enjoyed to the full. The lower ground floor is reached by a spiral staircase and houses an extra large bedroom with a quarter-sized snooker table.
The county town of Taunton is nearby for shopping, restaurants and entertainment, while Exmoor and the Quantocks offer superb walking, riding and wildlife. The coast is also close at hand. The lively resort of Minehead with its sandy bay and harbour, can be reached via the West Somerset Steam Railway from nearby Bishop’s Lydeard. Travelling west from Minehead, there is superb coastal scenery which can be enjoyed from the coastal path which leads on towards picturesque Porlock and beyond. Eastwards is the long sandy bay of Weston-super-Mare.
From the property many places of interest are within easy reach, including Cheddar Gorge, Wookey Hole, Wells, Glastonbury and several National Trust properties, such as Dunster Village and Castle, Montacute House and Barrington Court, making this a very well situated holiday base. Shop 2 miles.
