Fletland Mill (RAAO) is a stunning, lovingly converted former grain mill which was built on the banks of the River Glen in 1759 and now offers spacious detached accommodation. Mill Cottage (RAAN) also stands detached, and both properties are ideal accommodation in which to relax and unwind or to explore this part of Lincolnshire. Stamford is only 7 miles away - the home of Burghley International Horse Trials, Tallington Lakes and ski slope - Grimsthorpe Castle is also close by as well as the town of Bourne. With a open-plan living area at first floor level to take advantage of the views, and a large private suite tucked in the eaves, this makes Lane Side ideal for family get togethers, or a group of walkers wanting to explore this unspoilt area. Situated adjacent to a working livery yard overlooking rolling countryside, and with the Leeds and Liverpool canal towpath close by (where visitors can admire the painted barges, feed the ducks and watch the wildlife), this makes an ideal holiday base for at any time of the year. There is an abundance of walks in the area, with the Pendle Way being a 45-mile circular route starting at the Pendle Heritage Centre in Barrowford and visiting many of the local villages and historic sites on route. The view from the top of Pendle Hill is well worth the climb! Skipton, the gateway to the Dales, 20 minutes away by car, with markets being held several days each week on the cobbled main street overlooked by the Norman Castle, Trough of Bowland is both beautiful and peaceful, with pretty villages and wild moorland. For shoppers the area has many mill shops, including Boundary Mill at Colne, well known for famous brand clothing and home wares. The village of Embsay near Skipton has a large craft shop with café, and steam trains run regularly from the village station. The Settle-Carlisle railway starts at Hellifield (15 minutes away); Settle is famous for its shambles and a good stop-over for the Lakes. The Trafford Centre is around an hour’s drive, or take a day trip to visit the popular Fylde coast resorts of Southport, Lytham St Annes, Blackpool and Morecambe. There are plenty of places to eat out locally, with Italian, Cantonese and traditional English fare all available in the area. Golf can be found at Barnoldswick (1 mile). Shop 1 mile, pub 500 yards. Accommodation overview: Set on the owners’ non-working farm in the pretty village of Horbling, this spacious detached farmhouse and barn conversion are situated in the heart of the Fens, making an ideal touring base for visiting the area’s wealth of historic attractions. Abbotts’ Farm (Ref RI2) has been refurbished to provide comfortable holiday accommodation for families while sympathetically retaining many of its original features, including exposed woodwork, an ornate cornice in the dining room and a traditional farmhouse-style kitchen. There is a second sitting room, a well-stocked library and huge video and DVD collection (including latest releases), providing plenty of entertainment for everyone. Outside is a large, private, rear lawned garden with apple, pear and plum trees, as well as gooseberries which guests are welcome to pick in season, and a large patio with garden furniture and barbecue. Paddock View (Ref REE6) offers ‘upside-down’ style accommodation for a group of four and is furnished with Georgian antiques, but also has a very modern kitchen and bathroom. The flat fenlands make ideal walking and cycling country, an excellent way to view the landscape with its rich farmlands, huge skies and wonderful sunsets; lovely walks can be enjoyed from the doorstep; ample facilities can be found nearby for golf, fishing or horse riding. Within easy driving distance a wealth of interesting places can be discovered, including the delightful old towns of Uppingham, Oakham and Stamford, full of beautiful mellow stone buildings. On the edge of Stamford stands Burleigh House, one of England’s greatest Elizabethan houses. Nearby Spalding is an attractive, Dutch-influenced town and centre of the flower-bulb industry, where the Springfields show gardens and the annual flower festival in May are popular. Other places to visit are the splendid medieval Tattershall Castle (NT), Belton House and Coningsby, noted for its huge one-handed church clock, and the home of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. One of the landmarks of the Fens is the magnificent octagonal lantern tower of St Botolph’s Church in Boston, greeting visitors from miles around.
