The White Cliffs of Dover, also National Trust, are internationally famous and home to five miles of coast and countryside. Most of the chalk downland along the clifftops are a Sight of Special Scientific Interest, an Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty and Heritage Coast with interesting flora and fauna. The Gateway to the White Cliffs visitor centre boasts spectacular views and introduces the visitor to the area with imaginative displays and explanations. Shops 1½ miles.

Accommodation overview: Thoughtfully converted to a high standard, this stunning, thatched 17th-century barn has a plethora of beams and vaulted entrance hall. Standing detached, it is ideally situated on the edge of the picturesque village of Smarden - whose name is derived from the Saxon ‘Smeredaenne’, meaning butter valley and pasture. The holiday property has additional family room and an open-tread oak staircase which leads to a galleried mezzanine floor, where games facilities can be found.
Smarden was once a village thriving on the wool industry, and is now a sleepy backwater of old England, so classically Kentish that it is sometimes in film sets. In the heart of the village is a cluster of half-timbered houses with Kent peg tiled roofs. Golf can be found locally as well as fishing by arrangement.
For day trips, Sissinghurst Castle Gardens are well worth a visit, as are the vineyards at Biddenden. Leeds Castle is easily accessible and it closely resembles a fairytale palace, rather than a fortress. The fine aviary and maze are also sure to keep children interested and amused. There is easy access to Ashford, from where the Eurotunnel can be taken to enjoy lunch or dinner in either Paris or Brussels.
One of England’s most venerable cities, Canterbury has much to offer, with many shops, restaurants and theatres. A former church, now called The Caterbury Tales has guided tours which lead through galleries and recount Chaucer’s tales. Shops and pub 1 mile.

Take advantage of the welcoming wood-burning stove in winter whilst challenging a friend or family member to a game of pool; take a dip in the hot tub with only the Romney Marsh sheep for company, or relax on a summer’s evening on one of the two decked terraces soaking up the huge skies and sunsets of this unique area. Golden sandy beaches lie within a couple of miles and, with its level terrain, this is excellent cycling territory. Visit the Cinque Port town of Hythe which offers boating opportunities on the canal. Take the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway out to Dungeness and see Derek Jarman’s Garden and the old lighthouse. Port Lympne Wild Animal Park or day trip to France from Dover make very good days out. Lydd airport also provides an opportunity to take a flight to Le Touquet or along the coast on a balmy evening.
