There is a great variation of landscapes in this area, with the estuary of the Severn opening out nearby, and the Cotswolds rising suddenly beyond; to the north, the lush Vale of Gloucester spreads between the ancient Malverns and the solitary outcrop of Bredon Hill; to the west, the Wye Valley runs its twisting course, and beyond it the secret valleys and misted tops of the Cambrian mountains begin. The nearby Forest of Dean, renowned for its natural beauty and wildlife, covers 120,000 acres in total, 27,000 of which are oak woods – offering visitors delightful walks. May Hill (6 miles) is a fine spot for rewarding walks, and the 969-ft summit is a superb viewpoint over as many as ten counties. Exploration of the many border castles could begin at 12th-century Goodrich Castle (9 miles), which proved impregnable during warfare against the Welsh. Within easy reach are the Brecon Beacons, Ross-on-Wye, the historic city of Gloucester (7 miles), and racing at Cheltenham and Chepstow. Riding 5 miles. Shop/P.O. 1 mile.

Imaginatively converted from listed barns, they each enjoy shared use of an outdoor heated swimming pool (late May to early September) and a children’s playground. For larger group bookings, the Banqueting Barn is available by arrangement with the owner at cost. With its own kitchen, cloakroom and, if required a full catering service, it can dine up to 22 people and is ideal for special occasion celebrations and family get-togethers. An 18-hole golf course is also available. The farm lies at the end of a quiet lane, with breathtaking views over the Avon Valley and the Cotswolds. Tewkesbury, just 1½ miles away, stands as a small market town, largely untouched by the Industrial Revolution and is characterised by timber-framed medieval buildings and elegant Georgian houses. Being at the convergence point of four main roads, there is easy access from here to the towns of Gloucester, Worcester, Ledbury and Evesham – these all being within a distance of 15 miles. The pretty Cotswold villages nearby – renowned for their attractive honey-coloured stone houses – stand as witnesses to the prosperous times of the wool trade, when rich merchants during the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries built many of the area’s fine manors and churches from local stone. There is plenty of gentle walking to enjoy in the surrounding valleys, whilst the more dramatic Cotswold Way, running along the top of a ridge, passes through Cheltenham on its way from Chipping Campden to Bath lying further to the south.
