The property is situated in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, in a valley to the north of the River Brede providing a rich mosaic of habitats – where deer, badgers and of course foxes can be spotted. It is also renowned for its good fishing. The Sussex Weald is rich in historic significance: the abbey remains at Battle can be seen 3 miles away, whilst the beautiful ‘picture book’ moated castle at Bodiam (NT), and Pevensey Castle can be visited, or alternatively the smugglers caves at Hastings can be explored. Rye, infamous for its smuggling connections, retains windy cobbled streets and excellent tea rooms! Leeds Castle, Sissinghurst Gardens, Great Dixter Gardens and Smallhythe Place all make for an interesting day out. Pebble beaches at Bexhill and Winchelsea, and miles of golden sandy beach at Camber, lie a short drive away. Golf available locally. The lock itself was completed in 1808 whilst this detached, single-storey holiday cottage was built in 1824. Iden Lock is no longer a working lock; the last barge passed through it in 1909, the receipt for which was signed by Spencer Catt who had been the lock keeper since 1890. He was the great great great grandfather of The Lock Cottage’s current owner. Guests can paddle their canoe from Iden Lock to West Hythe or hire rowing boats at Hythe. Fishing and walking available.
