A trip aboard Swanage’s restored steam railway also makes for a fun day out, winding its way through pretty scenery to the ruins of Corfe Castle.

The beach at Ringstead Bay (6 miles) is known for its geology, fossils and the vegetation and wildlife of its undercliff; nearby can be seen the outlines of a village abandoned in the Middle Ages.
The Dorset World Heritage Coastal Path offers magnificent views and surprising sights, such as the natural arch of Durdle Door, and the almost circular cove of Lulworth, about 7 miles away.
Further west dotted along the coastline towards West Bay and the market town of Bridport are the ‘chocolate box’ villages of Burton Bradstock and Abbotsbury (famous for its swannery and gardens).

Accommodation overview: This large detached holiday home is located in the village of Harmans Cross, between the Jurassic Coastline, a designated World Heritage Site, and the picture postcard village of Corfe Castle. The vineyard was established in 2000, the vineyard has some 3000 vines. The on-site winery enables the wine grapes to be harvested, pressed and vinified into wine that truly is Chateau bottled. Tours can be organised by prior arrangement. Food hampers, casks and ½ casks of local beer and wine can be pre-ordered. The bedrooms are inviting, unique and individual - designed with relaxation in mind; they all feature hand sprung mattresses, deep baths or spectacular power showers. Newfield Barn is set off the beaten track surrounded by open countryside on the edge of the village of Pimperne, which has a lovely village pub and store. Adjoining one another, the cottages share a large enclosed garden, and each cottage has its own patio furniture to sit and enjoy the views over open fields. Hidden down a country lane, the cottages offer peace and quiet with many walks to enjoy in the surrounding countryside.
The medieval town of Blandford Forum is only 2 miles away and boasts one of the most complete Georgian townscapes in England, with the town hall, and Church of St Peter and St Paul being the main attractions. Mrs Penny’s Cavalcade of Costume, and the town museum also offer points of interest to visit within the town. Proving popular with visitors are Milton Abbas, the idyllic village 6 miles south-west, and Cerne Abbas with its Tudor cottages and abbey ruins, a further 10 miles away. The latter is home to one of the most visited sites in Dorset - that of the famous 180ft giant carved in the chalk hillside. To the north of Blandford lies Shaftesbury, with its steep and well-known quaint cobbled Gold Hill.
Just a short drive away lies the county town of Dorchester, serving as the main agricultural centre for the area, and offering a lively Wednesday market. Catering for many different tastes, there are also several museums to browse around - including the county museum, a small dinosaur museum, a military museum and one dedicated to Tutankhamun. Maiden Castle just outside the town is an example of a prehistoric fort, and dates from the Iron Age - the banks enclose an area of fifty football pitches, which would have housed 200 families. Higher Brockhampton is just a little further from the town centre and is worth a visit to see the cottage where the novelist Thomas Hardy lived. Max Gate - the writer’s last abode and where he lived for the longest period of time - is also open to the public. Just past the quaintly named village of Puddletown is the fine 15th-century Athelhampton House, with its gardens adorned by elegant fountains and unusual topiary features.
Within a 30-minute drive lies the wonderful Dorset coastline, with the Blue Flag beaches of Bournemouth and Poole, the Purbeck Hills and the pretty villages of Corfe Castle and Lulworth Cove. Revelling in a mild climate, Bournemouth is renowned for its clean sandy beach and boasts several public gardens, the best known of which is Compton Acres, comprising seven different international garden themes.
The Jurassic and Heritage coastline takes in the port of Weymouth and the lovely village of Abbotsbury with its famous Swannery which is the only place in the world where over 600 swans can be visited during the nesting and hatching time (end May - end June). Each has its own garden with furniture, and all enjoy shared use of the extensive gardens and grounds – as well as a range of facilities, including use of the owners’ small outdoor heated swimming pool (1st May - 30th Sept) set in a walled garden. There is a large games barn with pool table and table tennis, and a children’s play area with swings and slide. Approached along a private drive and set well back from the road, the cottages are perfectly positioned for enjoying this delightful corner of Dorset.
There are a variety of beautiful beaches, both sand and pebble, within a five to ten mile radius, including those at Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Seatown, Eype, West Bay and Burton Bradstock. Fossil-rich cliffs define this dramatic stretch of coastline, which encompasses the 2,000-acre National Trust estate of Golden Cap. This is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and superb walking country, both on the rolling chalk hills overlooking fertile inland valleys and on the coastal footpaths offering spectacular clifftop views. It is also an area full of romance and history, with three ancient hill forts and the house and gardens of Forde Abbey all nearby.
A range of attractions is on offer in nearby country towns. Lyme Regis is a pretty seaside resort, its elegant colour-washed buildings and promenade lining a handsome harbour. Motor boats can be hired and there are fishing trips, a sailing school, and a windsurfing school. Bridport is a thriving market town, featured on TV’s River Cottage, the Port Bredy of Hardy’s novels, offering a good choice of shops, inns, restaurants, an arts centre and a sports centre with indoor pool. The coastline is excellent for sea fishing and inland waters offer good coarse fishing. Golfers will find courses at Lyme Regis and West Bay. Guests can enjoy art classes with a trained instructor in our own studio (subject to an additional charge, availability and prior booking). There are also riding stables in the area. Caterers are available locally. The local shop at Marshwood and two charming thatched country pubs are within a short drive. Shops 2 miles.

Accommodation overview: Just 3 miles from the sea at West Bay, this superb property boasts its own indoor heated swimming pool, a garden with patio, and en-suite facilities to all bedrooms. Sympathetically converted from a former barn, it has been very well equipped to offer comfortable holiday accommodation for up to six people. This is an ideal base for exploring both Dorset’s lovely coastline and beautiful countryside.
Ancient Bridport (2 miles) has Saxon origins and was once an important rope-making centre. The amount of space needed to make rope is said to account for the town’s exceptionally broad streets, now the base for two popular weekly markets. There is a good choice of shops, a cinema and a new sports centre. A mile further on, West Bay has a harbour where fishing trips and rowing boat hire are available. The stunning Chesil Beach runs from here and stretches 17 miles along the coast to Weymouth. There are several other good beaches within easy reach of The Old Piggeries – at Charmouth, Seatown and, slightly further, at the charming and popular seaside resort of Lyme Regis, which offers plenty of attractions for visitors.
Walkers can enjoy meandering country footpaths passing through tranquil countryside, or more energetic hikes on the coastal path along the tops of towering cliffs, where the views are breathtaking. There are plenty of good country inns to offer refreshment. Inland, there are many picturesque villages to explore, with their pretty thatched roofs and interesting histories. Near the little town of Chard is Hornsbury Mill with its rural life displays, and beautiful Forde Abbey and gardens. Nearby is Crewkerne, an old-fashioned market town, with many bookshops and second-hand shops to explore. Dorchester is 7 miles. Golf 3 miles. Riding locally. Shops 2 miles.
