In an idyllic setting in the Darwin Forest on the edge of the Peak District National Park, this group of holiday cottages enjoys a wonderfully peaceful location from which to enjoy the area’s great natural beauty. Built in traditional Derbyshire stone to blend effortlessly into their surroundings, they are set around the lake and surrounded by mixed woodland, an ideal habitat for a rich variety of wildlife. The cottages are modern and spacious, with comfortably furnished living rooms, several enjoying views over the lake, and an excellent standard of fixtures and fittings throughout, including superbly equipped kitchens. A central courtyard area creates a focal point, and each cottage has its own patio, as well as shared use of the nine acres of beautiful wooded grounds which include an enclosed, elevated woodland walk around the lake.
This peaceful spot is the perfect stopping off point for walking and cycling amid superb countryside, and a trekking centre just around the corner provides plenty of opportunity to explore on horseback. For the more adventurous, a whole host of outdoor pursuits is available nearby, including sailing, wind-surfing and canoeing on Carsington Reservoir, 13 miles away, while Derbyshire’s gritstone edges and deep caverns attract rock climbing and pot-holing enthusiasts.
The popular Derbyshire Dales town of Matlock is only 4 miles away, with a good choice of pubs, restaurants and shops. Among the attractions here are the Peak Rail steam trains, the Heights of Abraham pleasure grounds, reached by a cable car across the gorge, dramatic show caverns and Gulliver’s Kingdom. There is also a fascinating Lead Mining Museum and an excellent Tramway Museum at Crich, providing something of interest for everyone. A short drive away is the splendid Chatsworth House with its fine collections of paintings and furniture, and Haddon Hall in the beautiful Wye Valley. Village shop and local pub 2 miles.

Accommodation overview: Set on the edge of the beautiful Peak District National Park, this attractive and spacious house with its own garden is just a short drive from Matlock, a fine Derbyshire Dales town with many attractions for visitors. Adjoining the owner’s home and other barns, Park Hill Farm has been carefully converted from a traditional stone-built barn and provides very comfortable and well-equipped holiday accommodation, making an ideal base for exploring the Derbyshire Dales and Peaks.
Matlock, once a spa town, is now a popular Regency resort and boasts a steam railway, wonderful tow-path walks, cycle trails and canal-boat hire. Along the valley, set among woods and limestone cliffs, is Matlock Bath, where a cable car spans the gorge to the Heights of Abraham. Here are fascinating show caverns demonstrating the earth’s history and the local lead mining industry, dating back to Roman times. Gulliver’s Kingdom provides entertainment for the children, while in the Pavilion there is an aquarium and Lead Mining Museum. Within easy reach are several historic houses to visit. Among them is Chatsworth House, a splendid classical mansion and one of England’s great stately homes, with a fine collection of paintings, sculpture and furniture as well as impressive gardens; and Haddon Hall, a beautifully restored medieval manor house.
Around the Matlocks, the countryside is steeped in history, with many old buildings, Norman churches and stone circles to intrigue the visitor. The Derbyshire Dales boasts some of England’s loveliest river valleys, those of the Derwent, the Wye and the Dove, while the High Peaks offer dramatic and rugged scenery, perfect for walking and riding. Chelmorton lies within the Peak District National Park, close to the Tissington Trail cycle path (cycle hire at Parsley Hay) and the Limestone and Midshires ways. Superb walking country is on the doorstep, whilst the beautiful valleys of Dove, Goyt, Manifold and Lathkildale are all a short drive away. The stately homes, Chatsworth House and Haddon hall are both well worth a visit and easily reached, whilst other attractions include an otter sanctuary (12 miles), limestone show caves, Alton Towers (30 miles) and the Roaches. Buxton offers two golf courses and tennis courts, whilst sailing can be arranged at the nearby Fernilee reservoir or at Carsington water.
