The popular Derbyshire Dales town of Matlock is only 4 miles away, with a good choice of pubs, restaurants and shops. Among the attractions here are the Peak Rail steam trains, the Heights of Abraham pleasure grounds, reached by a cable car across the gorge, dramatic show caverns and Gulliver’s Kingdom. There is also a fascinating Lead Mining Museum and an excellent Tramway Museum at Crich, providing something of interest for everyone. A short drive away is the splendid Chatsworth House with its fine collections of paintings and furniture, and Haddon Hall in the beautiful Wye Valley. Village shop and local pub 2 miles.

The historic market town of Ashbourne is one of Derbyshire’s finest old market towns and lies just a mile away from Hope Cottage. Famous for its antique shops it also offers cafes, restaurants, bars, gift and craft shops. Its cobbled market place and hidden alleys are a delight to explore, as is the elegant Church Street, which is considered to be the finest street of Georgian buildings in Derbyshire. Two miles further is the Peak District National Park with picturesque villages of Ilam, Dovedale and Thorpe Cloud as just a small example of the many areas of the park offering attractions including the rock pillars at Ilam Rock, Viators Bridge in Milldale, the Stepping Stones which lead to the limestone carvings at Lovers’ Leap and Reynard’s Cave. There are several trails such as Tissington and High Peak, which weave through the countryside, providing popular recreational walks and cycle paths that follow former railway lines. Carsington Water, with its watersports and visitor centre is also well worth visiting.

Refurbished, Woodside is ideal for any large family group and is well equipped. If guests can tear themselves away from this comfortable holiday home, there is plenty to see and do in the area. Matlock Bath is home to one of the Peaks District’s oldest and most popular days out. The Heights of Abraham combines wonderful views, stunning underground caverns and 60 beautiful acres of woodland. The cable cars introduced in 1984 allow visitors to obtain a bird’s eye view over the spectacular Derbyshire countryside – rising from the valley floor, the views take in the Derwent Valley and surrounding Peak District. The show caverns are believed to date back to Roman times, and visitors can experience a day in the life of a lead mining family in the Rutland Cavern. Gullivers World is another popular venue, where a wealth of rides await children. Not to be missed whilst in Derbyshire is a visit to magnificent Chatsworth House, set in 100 acres of formal gardens which feature the Emperor Fountain. Surrounded by vast grounds landscaped by Capability Brown, it is owned by the Duke of Devonshire and lies 4 miles east of Bakewell. The less grand Haddon Hall 2 miles south of Bakewell is nonetheless worthy of a visit and is stated to be one of the finest medieval manor houses in England.
